Birth

Labor is the process of giving birth to your child. It is distinguished between normal delivery and caesarean section. The recommended method of delivery is always the natural one, unless there are indications for a caesarean section, but the decision on the method of birth of your child is made together (doctor-pregnant woman collaboration) and after first explaining the pros and cons of the decision. Then the types of childbirth are briefly described.

 Normal vaginal delivery

Normal birth is the birth of your child through the normal birth canal (vaginal). It is divided into three stages: the first, second and third stages.

By first stage  dilation of the cervix is achieved with the parallel onset of contractions. The duration of this stage varies depending on the number of previous pregnancies and the number of previous vaginal deliveries. The time period of 12 hours is for many Obstetricians a criterion of "non-progress of labor" and an indication for caesarean section, but each case is individualized.

By second stage, that of delivery, the mother pushes the newborn out periodically, depending on the frequency of contractions and this leads to birth. The maximum time this stage can last without complications is thought to be 1-2 hours.

The third stage birth lasts about 30 minutes and includes the passage of the placenta.

Assisted vaginal delivery

The only difference compared to natural birth is that the exit of the newborn from the vagina is assisted by a tool such as a ventouse (suction cup) or forceps. This method of delivery is not predetermined, but is an emergency solution in case the newborn needs to be born faster, due to suspicion of future complications.

CAESAREAN SECTION

Caesarean section is a surgical procedure in which the newborn is born. Nowadays it is a fairly safe surgery, significantly improved compared to the past. Cesarean section can be performed electively (planned) if there are contraindications for normal delivery or if requested by the mother for her own reasons or urgently if the progress of normal delivery is not smooth.
